Setup (2D thumbnail → 3D blockout → camera match to thumbnail)
Planning your image as 2D thumbnails, building a 3D blockout from them, and matching the 3D camera to your chosen thumbnail.
What it is
You turn a loose 2D idea into a usable 3D setup without losing what made the thumbnail work. You start with small value or line thumbnails, pick one, and treat it as the “truth” for big shapes, perspective, and camera angle.
You build a simple 3D blockout that matches those big shapes: boxes for buildings, wedges for cliffs, cylinders for columns, rough mannequins for figures. Nothing is detailed; you only care about size, position, and orientation in space. While blocking out, you keep checking the thumbnail so your 3D scene doesn't drift from it.
You move the 3D camera until the major lines and shapes on screen line up with your thumbnail, adjusting focal length, tilt, and position until the vanishing directions, horizon, and big silhouettes overlap. If needed, you nudge the blockout to better match the thumbnail, then re‑tune the camera. The result is a 3D view that feels like your thumbnail but is now a stable base you can light, render, and paint over.
Why it matters
Without a solid 2D→3D setup, your 3D pass can kill the thumbnail: perspective shifts, silhouettes weaken, and the camera angle that sold the idea gets swapped for a generic one that was easier to match in software. You end up repainting large changes over a render that never matched the concept. When you block out from a thumbnail and lock the camera to it, your 3D refinements support the picture instead of rewriting it, and every render is ready for paint-over.
