Positive/negative shape comparison
You compare the shapes of your subject and its background to check proportion and angle — the gaps around things are a measuring tool too.
What it is
Positive shapes are the objects you draw: a figure, a chair, a tree. Negative shapes are the spaces around and between them — the wedge of wall beside an arm, the gap between two chair legs, the sliver of sky between branches.
You flip your attention between the object and the space around it. When checking a contour, ask not just "does this arm look right?" but "does the background shape next to it match the reference?" You treat that background shape like a puzzle piece that has to fit exactly.
During block-in, trace the abstract silhouettes around your subject with your eyes and compare their angles, widths, and curves to the reference. Adjust your drawing until both shapes — the object and the gap beside it — line up with what you see.
Why it matters
If you skip this, your eye slides over proportion and angle errors — you keep "fixing the arm" without noticing the space beside it is the wrong shape. Checking the negative shape gives you a second, more objective check: when both the object and the gap around it match the reference, your placement and scale are more likely accurate, and the drawing holds together as a whole, not a collection of guessed parts.
You can check it when
- ✓You can redraw a simple reference — a chair, a standing figure — by matching mostly the background shapes around it, and the result still reads as the subject.
- ✓Your drawn gaps between limbs, between objects, and between object and frame match the reference in width, height, and tilt when you compare them side by side.
- ✓When something looks off, you check both the object's outline and the negative shape around it — and you often find the error in the negative shape first.
- ✓You correct block-ins faster once you start reading the "holes" and wedges between forms, not just the forms themselves.
