Separating observation from assumptions

Compare your drawing with the reference and replace assumed shapes, angles, and proportions with what you actually observe.

What it is

Separate the specific shapes you see from familiar symbols for features such as eyes, noses, or cubes. Check angles, lengths, ellipses, and value masses against the reference as you draw.

Use repeated comparisons between the subject and your drawing. Measure angles, compare proportions, and adjust marks when they do not match, including when the observed result seems unusual.

Notice assumptions such as equal eye sizes, matching leg lengths, or parallel cylinder sides. Record the odd, uneven, or subtle features shown by the reference.

Why it matters

This control helps preserve likeness, depth, and gesture by keeping generic symbols and expected shapes from replacing observed details. Weak control can make faces look similar, straighten boxes, balance poses, or reduce perspective differences.
