Anatomy from imagination
Recalling how muscles sit on the body from memory so you can invent figures without copying a model or tracing anatomy plates.
What it is
You place the body's muscles in the right spot, size, and angle without a photo in front of you, and you know the major shapes well enough to rotate the figure in your head without losing accuracy.
You rough in a pose from a stick figure or gesture, then build the muscle masses on top: ribcage, pelvis, shoulder and hip masses, then the main muscle groups wrapping those structures. You're not copying a reference — you're using your memory of how muscles sit on the skeleton to give the body volume and tension.
You don't outline every fiber. You indicate key masses and overlaps: where a muscle bulges, where another tucks under, where tendons thin toward joints. Even simplified or stylized, you're guided by a real anatomy map, not guesswork.
Why it matters
Without this skill, your invented figures collapse the moment you change the angle, exaggerate a pose, or draw a body type you can't find in a photo — muscles drift to the wrong spots, volumes flatten, joints turn into soft tubes. With it, you can design characters, creatures, and costumes in any pose, light, or camera angle while keeping bodies solid and believable.
You can check it when
- ✓You can sketch a full figure from several angles (front, back, 3/4, above/below) without reference, and the muscle masses stay in plausible positions across views.
- ✓You can push a pose — more twist, more bend, more stretch — beyond your reference and still place believable muscle bulges, stretches, and overlaps instead of generic sausages.
- ✓Your invented figures stay consistent across a sequence — turnarounds, action beats, expression sheets — without muscles randomly changing size, shape, or location.
- ✓When you check your imagined anatomy against real references, you find small errors to fix, not missing muscle groups or misplaced forms.
