What it is
This is about keeping structure clear when you render things you invented, not copied from a photo. You have no reference telling you where light and shadow go. You decide how the form is built in 3D, where the light comes from, and render to match that structure.
In practice, that means you can invent a shape, block it in simply, then add light, shadow, and detail without losing track of what turns where. The nose you made up still reads as a boxy wedge with side planes, not a flat sticker of light and dark. The armor piece you designed can be walked around in your head: you know which planes face the light, which turn away, and your rendering stays loyal to that.
You keep your values and edges organized around form, not decoration. Even when you add textures, scratches, or stylized shapes of light, the underlying volumes stay readable. If someone draws a wireframe over your rendering, it sits comfortably on top of the shading you put down.

When you can only render accurately from reference, your imagined work often looks mushy or warped.
