Hair volume, flow, and rendering
Building hair as a 3D mass with clear flow and lighting, instead of flat strands pasted on the head.
What it is
You treat hair as a solid volume first, not as individual strands. You block in big masses that wrap around the skull: front fringe, side clumps, back mass, ponytail, bun. You think about its thickness, how far it extends from the skull, and how it overlaps the forehead, ears, neck, and shoulders.
Once the big masses are clear, you design the flow: the direction hair grows and falls, from the parting or hairline, around the crown, shaped by gravity, wind, or styling. You suggest this with grouped locks and ribbons, not random scratches. The curves have rhythm and hierarchy — a few main flows, then secondary breaks and flyaways.
Rendering comes last and supports the volume and flow. Light and shadow follow the 3D forms, not the 2D lines. You place broad shadow shapes where hair turns away from the light, mark bands of highlight where curved clumps catch it, and only then add finer texture. You focus contrast and detail near the face and simplify elsewhere so hair reads clearly at a distance.
Why it matters
Without solid volume and flow, hair looks like a flat sticker, a helmet, or a pile of lines. It stops matching the skull underneath, so hairstyles float, collapse, or break perspective. Lighting then has no believable surface to follow, so highlights look like random squiggles and shadows like dirty patches. Clear masses, believable direction, and structured rendering let hair frame the face and support the likeness instead of reading as noise.
