Jaw and neck connection
The jaw hinges to the skull and flows into the neck, so heads sit believably on the body from any angle.
What it is
The jaw and neck connection is how the lower half of the head connects to the torso — it's not a floating egg on a stick. The mandible (jawbone) wraps from the chin to just below the ears, hinges into the skull, and hands off to neck muscles anchored in the collarbones and sternum.
In practice, you think of the jaw as a solid, three-dimensional block, not a line under the mouth. From the side, you place the jaw joint slightly in front of the ear canal, then run the jaw down and forward to the chin. From the front, the jaw widens toward the angle under the ears, then narrows toward the chin, while neck muscles rise from the chest to meet that angle.
Drawing the neck means placing its cylinder under the back half of the skull, not under the chin. The big neck muscles — the V-shaped sternocleidomastoids — start at the pit of the neck and inner collarbones and climb up to behind the ear. From many angles, these muscles frame the throat, which is why the front of the neck doesn't simply fuse into the jawline.
When the head tilts, turns, or looks up and down, the jaw block moves with the skull while the neck muscles stretch on one side and bunch on the other. You can see this in the curve of the throat when someone looks up, or the compressed side of the neck on a sharp tilt.
Why it matters
Without a clear jaw-neck connection, heads look pasted on: chins float above the neck, jawlines turn into random curves, and the neck sits too far forward or back. This breaks first when the head turns or tilts — the jaw stops lining up with the ear, the throat looks like a tube, and the likeness weakens because the structure under the features is wrong. Get this right and your heads tilt believably, profiles hold up, and portraits sit convincingly on the body.
