Skull
The skull’s shapes, planes, and proportions, so you can build any head angle and support believable portraits.
What it is
The skull isn’t a medical diagram — it’s a 3D structure you can build and turn in space. You know the size and placement of the cranium (the “ball”), the face mask (the front wedge with eyes, nose, mouth), and the jaw. You can block in these big parts with simple forms before adding features.
In practice, you lightly “see through” the skin when drawing a head. You place the eye sockets as hollow cups, the cheekbones as a ridge wrapping around the head, the nose as a bony wedge, and the jaw as a hinged block wrapping under the ears. Even in loose sketches, these masses stay solid and consistent from view to view.
You also know the main planes of the skull: forehead sloping back, eye sockets recessed, cheekbones and brow ridges sticking out, teeth area curving in, chin projecting out. When you light a head, you’re lighting these planes. You can simplify them into clear light and shadow shapes without guessing where the bone is.
Why it matters
Without a solid sense of the skull, heads drift off-model: eyes slide around, faces flatten, and expressions look rubbery. Features end up stuck on like decals instead of growing out of shared structure, so the same character’s bone structure shifts from panel to panel. With the skull in mind, you get consistent proportions, believable volume from any angle, and a stable “armature” that supports muscles, fat, and stylization without losing believability.
You can check it when
- ✓You can draw a basic skull from any common angle (front, 3/4, side, up, down) using simple forms, without copying a photo line for line.
- ✓Your portraits keep the same underlying head shape and bone structure when you turn the head, instead of the face “reshuffling” in each view.
- ✓You place and light the brow ridge, cheekbones, eye sockets, nose bridge, and jawline so they feel solid and 3D, not floating or arbitrary.
- ✓When you push style (big eyes, small nose, etc.), you can still explain to yourself what the underlying skull would be doing under that design.
