Inventing believable materials without copying a photo
Designing new materials from imagination that still feel physically believable, without copying a photo.
What it is
You take your understanding of light, surface, and material behavior and use it to invent materials that don't exist in your reference — a dragon's scales, an alien alloy, a fantasy fabric — and paint them so they feel like real substances light is actually bouncing off.
In practice you break the problem down: how hard or soft the surface is, how shiny or matte, how transparent, how thick, and what color it is in light versus shadow. Then paint those decisions consistently across the whole object, so highlights, reflections, and shadows all follow the same rules.
You still use reference, just not as a picture to copy. Study several real materials, pull out their behaviors — how leather wrinkles, how metal catches highlights, how stone chips — and recombine them into something new. Then ask: if this were really there, under this light, what would it do? Paint that answer, not what a photo looks like.
Why it matters
Without this skill, you get stuck hunting for the perfect photo, and your designs end up looking like slightly modified reference. Made‑up objects get generic shading, random highlights, and inconsistent texture, so the viewer can't tell what they're made of or how they'd feel to touch. With it, your concepts stop looking like flat costumes over forms and start feeling like real objects in a world with rules, even an imaginary one.
You can check it when
- ✓You can describe how a made‑up material behaves (hard/soft, glossy/matte, thick/thin, brittle/flexible) and match that description in your painting.
- ✓You can design a new material from 2–3 real‑world references without copying any single one, and it still reads as coherent and believable.
- ✓Your invented materials stay consistent across the object: the same surface shows the same highlights, shadows, and texture everywhere.
- ✓You can look at a finished piece and explain why the light, shadow, and reflections on each material behave that way — not just because “it looked good there.”
