Ellipses in perspective
Drawing circles in perspective so cylinders, holes, and round objects look solid and aligned with the scene.
What it is
Any circle in perspective becomes an ellipse: a squashed circle with a long axis (major axis) and a short axis (minor axis). You use these to build cylinders (arms, mugs, pipes), rounded boxes, wheels, and any circular detail that turns in space.
You place ellipses so they sit believably on a plane: a cup's rim on a table, a barrel's top and bottom aligned on the same vertical, cross-sections along a tilted limb. Each ellipse's minor axis points in the direction the form is facing, not wherever looks nice.
You control how open each ellipse is, based on viewing angle and eye level. As a form rotates, its ellipses change degree smoothly — not flat, flat, flat, then suddenly wide — so a bottle, wheel, or tube reads as one solid, not a stack of unrelated ovals.
Why it matters
Without solid ellipses, round objects fall apart: cups look twisted, wheels look flat, holes don't pierce the surface. Misaligned ellipses break perspective even when your straight lines are correct. Control them and you can foreshorten cylinders reliably, attach limbs and mechanical parts cleanly, and keep every round element aligned to the same horizon and vanishing points.
You can check it when
- ✓You can draw a cylinder whose top and bottom ellipses share a center line and read as one solid object.
- ✓You can rotate a cylinder in any direction and its ellipses change degree and angle smoothly, without guessing or sudden jumps.
- ✓You can place an ellipse on a tilted plane — a hole through a wall, a circle on an angled panel — so it sits flush instead of floating or twisting.
- ✓Your cups, wheels, limbs, and other round forms look stable, not "about to tip over," when you flip or rotate the canvas.
