Architectural proportion
How size relationships in buildings — door height, floor spacing, window width — make your architecture feel buildable and human-scaled.
What it is
Architectural proportion is how a building's parts relate in size: floor height to a person, doorway width to the wall, window size to the facade. In practice, you keep asking how big each part is relative to the others as you draw.
You rough in a building against a clear scale reference — usually a human — then size everything else off that: stairs at a real step height, railings around hip level, windows someone could actually look out of. Even in fantasy or sci-fi, most decisions still need a readable, believable scale.
You also use proportion to control visual hierarchy. Main entrances get larger doors and more generous steps than side entrances. Important halls get taller ceilings and wider bays than service corridors. Repeating elements — windows, columns, balconies — keep a consistent rhythm, so the building reads as designed, not randomly assembled.
Why it matters
Without solid proportion, your buildings feel off in ways viewers can't quite name: doors too small to walk through, windows at odd heights, unsafe-looking stairs, floor levels that don't align with the facade. Characters placed in later float or shrink to fit, and the result reads as a stage set, not a real place. With solid proportion, even stylized or exaggerated architecture stays grounded enough that viewers instantly grasp how big it is, how they'd move through it, and which spaces matter.
You can check it when
- ✓You drop a human figure (or a known object, like a car) into the sketch early and size everything else off it.
- ✓Your door, window, stair, and railing sizes look right next to your characters without fixing in paintover.
- ✓Your buildings read clearly at a glance: viewers can tell the floor count, where to enter, and roughly how tall each level is.
- ✓When you exaggerate proportions for style, you can explain what changed and why, and your edits still look structurally and functionally believable.
