How vehicles are sized and arranged so people can actually use them: proportions, seating, controls, access, and interior volume.

What it is

Vehicle architecture is a vehicle's body plan: wheelbase and overall length, cabin size, how much room the engine or power source needs, door placement, and how many people fit and how. You design this skeleton before the surface styling.

You sketch with a constant sense of scale: drop in a standing person, a seated driver, or a pilot in a cockpit early, then build the vehicle around them. You decide seat height, legroom, headroom, sight lines out the windows, and how thick doors and floors need to be. The outside proportions follow from those interior decisions.

You also plan the internal layout: where controls, dashboards, pedals, or joysticks sit, how someone gets in and out, where cargo, weapons, or fuel go, and how maintenance access works. Even for fantasy and sci-fi, you can point to where the crew sits, where they walk, and how their bodies move through the space. Your exterior and interior/cockpit sketches line up and feel like one object.

Why it matters

Without vehicle architecture, designs collapse the moment you imagine someone using them: doors too small, windows at chest level, wheels tiny under a bus-sized body, or a cockpit that could not fit the pilot you drew. Interiors and exteriors stop matching — a huge canopy over a space that would barely fit a head, or a bulky mech torso somehow holding three people and an engine with no room for either. Sound architecture keeps your proportions, layouts, and human scale believable, so art directors can trust your designs in games and film.
