Render settings (samples, denoising, transparent backgrounds)
Clean 3D renders with the right samples, denoising, and transparency — so you can paint over them reliably in 2D.
What it is
Render settings tell the 3D software how carefully to calculate the image. Samples are how many times the renderer tests each pixel to solve lighting and reflections — more samples mean cleaner results but longer render times. Pick a sample count that removes obvious noise without chasing film-level perfection.
Denoising is a post-process that smooths the leftover grain. Used well, it lets you render with fewer samples and still get a clean base to paint on. Used badly, it smears textures, edges, and small details into mush. Rely on it for broad forms and blockouts; turn it down or off for hard edges and close-up materials you'll keep.
Transparent backgrounds come from enabling an alpha channel in the render. Instead of baking your model onto a sky or flat color, you export it with transparency so it drops straight into Photoshop over a painted background — no fighting a solid backdrop to adjust edges and effects.
In practice: choose a render engine's quality preset, adjust samples until test renders are clean, pick a denoiser and its settings, check that thin lines and small shapes survive the denoise pass, and confirm your output format (like PNG with alpha) keeps transparency and clean, non-fringed edges.
Why it matters
Without control over samples, you get noisy renders that are painful to paint over, or you waste hours on needless quality. Poor denoising turns forms and edges into a soft blur, so the 3D no longer helps with accuracy. Without proper transparency, you end up hand-cutting every render and fighting halos instead of using 3D as a speed boost. Dialed-in settings give you a clean base that drops straight into your 2D workflow.
