Multiple figures interacting (contact, weight sharing, grappling)
Drawing two or more figures in physical contact so their poses, weight, and tension feel connected and believable.
What it is
This is posing figures that visibly affect each other: pushing, pulling, lifting, leaning, hugging, grappling, carrying, or colliding. You're not drawing two solo poses side by side — you're designing one combined shape from several bodies, with clear contact points and shared force.
In practice, you track how weight moves through the group. If one person leans, someone else must receive that weight. If one arm pulls, the other body shows the pull in its spine, shoulder, or footing. Hands don't just touch — they grab, support, hang, or brace, shown through tension, compression, and angle, not just placement.
You also manage spacing and overlap so the cluster reads clearly. Limbs weave in front of and behind each other in a way that makes sense in 3D. Keep the negative space between bodies intentional, so you can tell which arm belongs to which torso and where each person sits in depth.
Why it matters
Without this, scenes with more than one figure look stiff and disconnected: hugs read as two mannequins standing close, fights look like staged practice, crowds feel weightless. Once you can show contact, weight sharing, and grappling, poses start to tell the story by themselves: who's winning, who's helping, who's resisting, and where the strain really is.
You can check it when
- ✓You can redraw a single-figure pose as a push, pull, or carry with a second figure, and both bodies still feel balanced and grounded.
- ✓You can show where the weight is going in a grapple or lift (into the ground, into the partner, into a wall) without needing motion blur or effects.
- ✓Your contact points (hands on arms, shoulders, clothing, walls) visibly deform or brace instead of just touching like magnets.
- ✓You can overlap limbs and torsos in a group sketch clearly enough to trace each figure's center line and major masses without confusion.
