Presentation (turnarounds, scale comparison, callouts)

Presenting your creature with turnarounds, scale cues, and callouts so others can understand, build, and reuse the design.

What it is

This is about laying out your creature in a clean, informative sheet — not a single cool illustration. You show the design from multiple angles (turnarounds), indicate how big it is next to familiar things (scale comparison), and zoom in on important parts with notes (callouts).

In practice, a turnaround might be front, side, and back views drawn on the same page, lined up so key landmarks match: eyes at the same height, joints vertically aligned, features not drifting between views. Keep the drawing style restrained — clear lines and flats or simple shading — so forms read consistently between angles.

Scale comparison is usually one or two simple silhouettes beside the creature — a human, a car, a tree, or another known object — answering "how big is this, really?" at a glance. Keep the perspective simple and avoid dramatic camera angles so the scale stays honest.

Callouts are zoomed-in drawings or crops with arrows pointing to specific features — claws, mouth structure, saddle rigging, bioluminescent organs — with short text explaining function, materials, or how something moves. They are not mini posters; they are diagrams that answer likely questions from modelers, riggers, animators, writers, or other artists.

A finished sheet balances all three: main views taking most of the space, a clear scale bar or comparison silhouette, and callouts along the edges explaining whatever the main views alone could leave unclear.

Why it matters

Without solid presentation, a well-designed creature is still hard to use in production: modelers guess proportions without a side view, animators misread limb structure without a callout on how joints bend, and directors can't tell if it fits through a doorway without a scale comparison. That gap means endless back-and-forth, revisions, and inconsistent versions of the same creature across shots. Clear turnarounds, scale, and callouts turn your idea into a shared, buildable design that everyone reads the same way.
