How you make a creature walk, run, turn, and push off — and where its weight sits at every step.

What it is

Movement means the mechanics of getting a creature from A to B: how many legs it uses at once, how far each step reaches, how it turns, climbs, swims, or flies. You decide the basic gaits — a slow prowl, a sprint, an underwater glide, a hovering flap, a loping trot on six limbs.

Weight distribution is where its mass sits and how that shifts as it moves. A heavy front end needs wide, stable front support. A long tail counterbalances a high chest. A towering biped needs a wide enough base to not topple. You decide which parts bear load and which are along for the ride.

In practice, this shows up in side views, gait breakdowns, and motion studies: walk cycles, run cycles, takeoffs, landings, tight turns. You show how feet or fins contact the ground or water, how far the body dips on impact, and how the center of gravity travels over each support. Even in a single key pose, you place limbs and tilt the body so the creature looks like it could take the next step without snapping or falling over.

Why it matters

Without believable locomotion and weight, a beautifully rendered creature feels like a costume pinned to a mannequin: legs plant in impossible places, joints bend in ways that couldn't push off the ground, and the body floats instead of compressing under its own mass. Animators, storyboard artists, and clients won't know how it's meant to move, which kills its use for games and film. Get movement and weight right, and your designs feel inhabitable — you can imagine the thump of footsteps, the sway of the torso, and how it would navigate its world.
