Historical, cultural, and functional research

Research history, culture, and function to ground designs in specific details, context, and practical use.

What it is

Study how people, objects, buildings, and clothing existed and worked before designing around them. For a medieval market, research clothing, goods, stall construction, and street density. For a sci-fi firefighter, study real firefighting gear, movement, and purpose.

Identify the time, place, or culture linked to the design. Ask what problem an object, building, or costume solves. Use relevant sources, such as photos, museum collections, documentaries, technical diagrams, first-hand accounts, and everyday objects with the same context or function.

Apply the research to sketches and composition. Use details such as fabric wrapping, objects hanging from a belt, wear on tools, and crowd arrangement to guide what you center, push to the edges, repeat, include, or avoid.

Why it matters

Research supports specific details and helps prevent generic, stereotypical, or impractical choices. Weak research can lead to misplaced symbols, incorrect object use, and spaces or structures that do not fit their era, climate, culture, or function.
