Species studies

Study how animal groups differ so you can design believable creatures rooted in real species.

What it is

Species studies means studying specific animal families and orders instead of treating “animal” as one generic shape. You compare horses to deer, wolves to big cats, hawks to parrots, snakes to lizards, beetles to crabs, sharks to eels — noting what stays constant in each group and where nature allows variation.

In practice, this means study pages — hoofed mammals, canines, felines, and more — comparing skulls, proportions, silhouettes, and poses. You start noticing patterns: how ungulate legs stack, how a dog's ribcage shapes its torso, how bird wings fold, how insect joints repeat, how fish fins and tails follow standard types.

You also build a set of “design levers” for each group: for birds, how beak type, tail shape, and wing length shift function and personality while still reading as bird. For reptiles, how scales, head plates, and body thickness vary between snakes and lizards. The same logic applies to arthropod segment counts, fish fin placement, and feline vs. canine head markers.

As you improve, you stop copying single photos and start combining references across a group — a new big cat built from several real ones, or a fantasy raptor drawn from eagles, vultures, and owls. The result stays grounded in how the family actually looks and moves, even though the final creature is invented.

Why it matters

Skip species studies and animals drift toward the same vague body plan — generic “four legs,” generic “wing,” generic “tail.” Designs feel flat or unintentionally funny because they ignore cues viewers recognize from real life. Grounding your creatures in real biology gives you specific shapes to push and mix with control — the difference between a believable dragon built from birds, cats, and reptiles, and a random limb salad that falls apart on closer look.
