About
About the skill map
Am I Industry-Ready? is a free self-assessment for concept artists and illustrators. It organizes 390 skills into nine stages.
Check the skills you can perform consistently. The map estimates your current level, shows your strongest areas, and identifies skills you may want to practice next.
What the map covers
The map begins with drawing, perspective, value, light, color, anatomy, composition, and visual storytelling. It also covers character, creature, environment, prop, and vehicle design; finished illustration; and 3D tools used in a 2D workflow.
The nine stages move from foundations to finished work and integration. You can also use them as a suggested study sequence.
Who this is for
- Character artists reviewing anatomy, costume design, and rendering skills
- Environment artists reviewing perspective, architecture, and environment design skills
- Creature designers studying comparative anatomy
- Digital illustrators working toward editorial, publishing, or entertainment work
- Concept artists who use 3D blockouts, sculpting, or paint-over techniques
- Students, self-taught artists, and working artists planning what to practice next
How the score works
The checklist runs in your browser. There is no account, and you can export your progress at any time. The site collects anonymous usage data to improve the map. Checked skills and assessment results are linked to a random ID, not a name. Location is limited to a country or region, and IP addresses are stored only as one-way hashes. The site also uses Vercel Web Analytics and Google Analytics for traffic data.
Check a skill when you can perform it consistently.
Your score is a weighted average of the nine stages. Each stage contributes according to its weight, regardless of how many skills it contains. The 34 3D Support skills and 4 specialized skills marked ✦ are tracked but do not affect your rank. The score is based on 352 core skills.
Each rank includes the requirements of the ranks below it. Above Competent, some requirements depend on your selected path. Illustrators are assessed more heavily on figure work and finished images, while concept artists are assessed more heavily on design skills.
What the result can tell you
The map cannot review your artwork. Its result depends on how accurately you assess your own skills.
It measures skill coverage, not the quality of your work, portfolio, or professional experience. Use the result to plan your practice. Do not treat it as a hiring decision.
Where the list comes from
The map draws on classical art curricula, common concept-art workflows, and the Swatches Academy career kit. If a skill is unclear, misplaced, or missing, use “Suggest an edit” on the map.
